Our Mission

To advance efficiency and durability of fuel cells to enable their commercialization in multiple sectors including baseload power and data centers, maritime, heavy-duty vehicles, drones and other applications.

Our Focus

To transform hydrogen fuel cells from promising technology into widespread reality, we must engineer next-generation solutions tailored to diverse applications, optimizing performance, maximizing efficiency, and extending operational lifetimes across every use case.

The consortium is pioneering the development of advanced materials and membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) engineered to deliver superior efficiency, power output, and durability.
These innovations will perform reliably across diverse operating environments and real-world conditions, including the presence of impurities, accelerating hydrogen's path to becoming a cornerstone of our energy future.

Through comprehensive investigation of how materials and components evolve throughout their entire lifecycle, from synthesis through operation to eventual recovery and reuse, we're building the foundational science needed for transformative breakthroughs. By integrating advanced modeling, accelerated stress testing, and AI-driven predictive analytics, we're not just understanding current limitations—we're engineering solutions that anticipate and overcome the challenges of tomorrow, ensuring hydrogen fuel cells deliver sustained, real-world performance for decades to come.

Who We Are

M2FCT is a Department of Energy (DOE)-funded consortium formed by five primary national labs to overcome durability and efficiency challenges in PEMFCs for multimodal applications, including stationary, transportation, and energy security. The consortium coordinates National Laboratory activities related to fuel cell efficiency and durability, provides technical expertise, and harmonizes activities with industrial players, thus amplifying their impact

M2FCT comprises five principle National Laboratories listed below and supports industry-led projects

  • National Laboratory Consortium Members:
  • Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL)
  • Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL)
  • Argonne National Laboratory (ANL)
  • National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR)
  • Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL)

What We Do

M2FCT is leading the charge in restoring and maintaining American leadership and dominance in advanced technologies for energy independence, national security, and economic growth, with a deep focus on foundational science. By supporting homegrown manufacturing  and creating high-quality American jobs, M2FCT will help rebuild the industrial strength of our nation.

M2FCT serves as a beacon in the community and clearinghouse for data and ideas, while providing proactive leadership and guidance under its umbrella of lab, academic, and industrial projects. We plan to strengthen domestic competitiveness with a focus on stationary and transportation applications first, then expanding upon other applications over the consortium’s lifetime.
